The Eli and Edythe Broad Stage at the Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center opened its doors in October 2008. Inspired by Italian "horseshoe" theaters yet conceived in an absolutely contemporary vernacular, The Broad Stage is an artist’s dream and an audience’s delight. Unlike any performance space in the country, it is sublimely intimate with 499-seats and strikingly grand at the same time––forging a new kind of artist and audience experience in Los Angeles. Theater shows, dance, film, operas, musicals, symphony and chamber orchestras are presented on one of the city’s largest proscenium stages. In a short time, The Broad Stage has become a premiere venue for world-class opera recitals, presenting superstars Angela Gheorghiu, Bryn Terfel, Elīna Garanĉa, Juan Diego Flórez, Vittorio Grigòlo and many others.
In addition to The Broad Stage, The Edye, a one hundred seat black box space, presents new, developing and innovative work in theater, music and dance. Current and past programming includes the Under the Radar Series produced by musician Ben Wendel, Quincy Jones Presents, an exciting series curated by the great Quincy Jones and works by well-known artists like Hershey Felder, The National Theatre of Scotland, Ruby Wax, and others. The Broad Stage’s education and outreach program currently reaches 23,500 students and community members annually through over 30 free and low-cost events.
The Broad Stage is led by Jane Deknatel, Director of the Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center.
