PUBLIC POLICY INSTITUTE
For over 20 years, SMC has been the #1 transfer college to the UCs and CSUs, and now it can claim another first, this time as the first and only California Community College offering an Associate in Arts degree as well as a Certificate of Achievement in Public Policy. Students may specialize in the following areas: Education Policy, Environmental Policy, Public Health Policy and Urban/Socioeconomic Policy.
The AA and Certificate complement the work being done in the SMC Public Policy Institute (PPI), led by founding director, former State Senator Sheila Kuehl and associate director, SMC political science professor Richard Tahvildaran-Jesswin, who holds the President’s Circle Chair of Excellence in Philosophy and Social Science.
The Institute provides a non-partisan, educational opportunity that opens the doors of government to students with an interest in participating in the development, analysis and implementation of public policies beginning with their inception to their enactment. PPI exemplifies the College’s mission, vision and goals, which include a commitment to democratic participation and education.
