SMCF: Tell us about your role as a leader at SMC.
DR: Being part of Adelante has been the most rewarding experience at SMC because it has opened so many doors and helped begin a network at SMC. Being a leader at SMC and especially the President of the Adelante Club, has taught me how to become a leader, but most importantly, has taught me how to make leaders out of people. Adelante Club is a relatively new club that has only been established for two years and being part of it since the beginning has been an amazing experience. My peers and I built it and we are still seeing it grow! I can proudly say that Adelante is here to stay at SMC for future students to benefit from!

SMCF: Why did you choose to attend SMC?
DR: I chose SMC because it’s close to home and because of its reputation.

SMCF: What about the SMC environment motivates you as a student?
DR: The clubs. I absolutely love Club Awareness Day and Club Row. Club Awareness Day is like a pre-game for Club Row because all of the clubs at SMC join at the main quad and represent their club. You see all of the diversity, culture, and leadership that can be found at SMC. Students walking by the main quad during those two events are surrounded by such bright, intelligent, and self-motivated students. That is what distinguishes SMC from other environments - the sense of belonging and the school spirit.

SMCF: “PROUD TO BE SMC” is the alumni chant. What are you, as an individual, most proud of?
DR: I’m proud of being able to represent the Adelante Club, and its parent program, the Adelante Program. The Adelante Program has fabulous counselors who make students their top priority. They are caring and enthusiastic. If they don’t have an answer to a student’s question, then they will find someone who does. As the Black Collegians Center is right next to the Latino Center, we get the best of both worlds as they also have magnificent counselors and faculty. They support us and show us that even though we may be underprivileged minorities, anything is attainable. The counselors are our role models. I’m proud of being a product of the Adelante Program and President of the Adelante Club.

SMCF: What three (3) words best describe your experience as an SMC student?
DR: Adventurous, Painful, Welcoming.

SMCF: Final question: What words of inspiration would you share with a new student starting at SMC?
DR: Your college life is what you make of it. College is the time to get out of your comfort zone and to explore what’s out there. Ultimately, it’s the time to find you by getting involved in school clubs, sports, or student government. SMC really exceeds at going beyond their mission statement, but the students also need to be open-minded and willing to try out new things. College will beat you down and help you back up, just like life, and that’s the true lesson that SMC will teach you - how to get up and keep moving forward.
